CHECKLIST of investigation topics

 

 

ð       What are the greatest challenges that SMEs face when participating in international trade?  (e.g. language barriers, logistics, customs, foreign marketing practices, financing, locating prospective customers, packaging, etc.).

 

ð       Does the size of the business play a role in determining what the primary challenges are?  (i.e. micro vs. small vs. medium)

 

ð       Are there major differences in the respective challenges faced by exporters of products vs. exporters of services?

 

ð       What is the role of SME consortiums, business associations, chambers of commerce, and/or non-government organizations in promoting and facilitating small business trade?

 

ð       What are the primary factors that affect the decision to participate or not pursue international trade opportunities?  (e.g. Is the decision typically reactive or pro-active?)

 

ð       What is the perception among SMEs about the anticipated Free Trade Area of the Americas? (e.g. threat, opportunity, indifference)

 

ð       How active are SME in utilizing the Internet to market themselves and transact business?

 

ð       How active are SMEs in utilization of government resources/assistance in trade preparedness and promotion?

 

ð       How do business linkages, such as supplier relationships, relate to SME participation in trade?  Are SMEs aware of such participation as indirect exporters?
